Football continues through Phase 4

Following the week earlier start of Phase 4, classes moved to completely online on Monday, Nov. 16. UW football will play the remainder of their season despite this change.

“When the Mountain West Conference announced its conference-only schedule earlier this fall it announced that there was no room in the schedule for games to be made up.  The schedule was established for all MW schools to play eight games in eight weeks, with the ninth week being the MW Championship Game on Saturday, Dec. 19.,” said Tim Harkins, Associate Athletics Director for Media Relations, Public Relations and Broadcasting.

Three games are scheduled between now and the Championship Game: UW at UNLV on Nov. 27, UW at New Mexico on Dec. 5, and Boise State at UW on Dec. 12.

Harkins said, “Neither our Air Force game that was cancelled by the Mountain West Conference last week, nor our Utah State game that was cancelled this Wednesday will be made up.  It is important to note that both of those games were cancelled by the Mountain West Conference due to Air Force and Utah State having COVID numbers that were too high to allow them to play.  Our team was able to play both of those games.”

The 2020 Mountain West Conference Football Testing and Game Thresholds can be found here.

According to Harkins, athletes and staff have to be tested for COVID-19 three times a week per the Mountain West regulations. This is separate from on campus testing.

Harkins said, “Athletes will be allowed to stay in the dorms until Dec. 11. They will not be allowed to go home for Thanksgiving.  They will be practicing here in Laramie and our next scheduled game is the day after Thanksgiving (Friday, Nov. 27).  The team will be flying to Las Vegas on Thanksgiving Day via a team charter flight that only has team members and staff who are in our team testing bubble on the flight.”

On Nov. 17, UW announced that for the remainder of the season the amount of fans allowed at the home games would be reduced from 7,000 to 5,000. This reduction will apply to the Boise State game in Laramie.
