Student shares experience with work-study during pandemic

I started working at the Learning Resource Center (LRC) in the UW Lab School during the fall of my sophomore year. I never would have thought that my last year would start off with so many restrictions due to COVID-19.

As a library aide, I’m used to seeing the Lab School students during class checkout times and throughout the day when they come into the library. This year, it’s been different and dispiriting.

Since the school district and UW require masks, it’s made it hard to recognize students and teachers. It’s definitely lead to frustrations on all sides when I have to ask for someone’s name, even though I’ve known them for three years.

The circulation desk I work at has plexiglass dividers to protect employees from the students, and the students from employees. It’s extremely awkward and it took some getting used to.

Early on in the semester, I had to quarantine due to a close contact. Due to this, and a hiring pause at UW, the LRC was short handed for two weeks.

This has been an ongoing issue this semester, as the situation has continually changed at UW. Because of Phase 4 starting early, the LRC is shorthanded again for the next couple weeks.

I’m lucky enough to be able to work at the LRC during the J-term, however this isn’t the case for a lot of on campus jobs, especially this semester. Many students went home early or may not have been able to stay in Laramie after Thanksgiving for work.

Even though my job isn’t the same this year, I still look forward to working in the library and seeing the students.
