UW offers meal swipe program to students with food insecurities

The University of Wyoming has announced a pilot program known as Meal Swipe Sharing that is to be launched this semester.

The main page for the program found on the UW directory said, “This program is a regenerative, student-focused food sharing program, allowing students to donate their ‘swipes’ and unused meals from previously purchased dining plans.”

Sustainability Collation and UW Food Security Taskforce intern Olivia Lyle said, “With the pandemic continuing to be an issue it’s obvious there needs to be a source of food that students can access easily.”

The program, with funding from ASUW provided special grants, purchased a stock of meals to be distributed through Washakie Dining Center. Washakie employee, Janaye Kristy, said she has seen appreciation from students already.

“It’s almost like this place is fully serving its purpose again,” Kristy said. “We’re serving out meals like we’re supposed to and every student I’ve heard from or talked to so far has been super appreciative. I’m just glad we can get something out there for all the broke and hungry students.”

Students can gain access to a stock of two thousand swipes that they can use when needed to alleviate food insecurity issues. Students are allowed a maximum of four swipes a week.

Ethan Chan, a senior who has found difficulty securing groceries after losing his job due to the COVID-19 pandemic said, “I sort of wish this had been a thing sooner. I’m glad I can use it now though. It’s nice to have a food swipe program like they did when we were freshmen again. Hopefully it lasts for a while.”

The program has stated that its plan for a prolonged continuation revolves around student support as well. The UW Food Security Taskforce asked that students donate unused meal swipes back to the program or buy extra swipes in order to keep the stocks of swipes fully packed.

“I’d like to see everyone get the chance to grab a meal from Washakie. We need everyone to chip in where they can, but I have faith in the student body to help one another out,” Kristy said.

The process for the meal swipe program begins with an application that can be found on the parent page site located here: Meal Swipe Sharing Program | Dean of Students | University of Wyoming (uwyo.edu)
