Volleyball player becomes 13th in UW history to record 1000 kills

On Thursday, Sept. 15, during the UniWyo invite, Graduate student Kailey Carissa (KC) McMahon became the 13th University of Wyoming volleyball player to record 1000 kills, making her a member of the 1000-kill club.

She is the first Cowgirl to join this club during the 2022 season. The last person to achieve 1000 kills was Jackie McBride during the 2021 season. There are a total of 13 people in this club in its history.

“That was awesome,” McMahon said. “Overall, we felt really confident going into that second game. a lot of my best friends are on the team so it was great to share it with them.”

McMahon joined the elusive club after achieving 21 kills during the midday game against Nicholls state and ending the day with ten kills against Morehead State.

“Going into this weekend I knew I only needed 21 kills to reach 1000. And then I got switched to the outside which made it even more possible to get.”

Her kills helped Wyoming win both games in three sets, the final scores being 25-16, 25-16 and 25-21 and 25-18, 27-25, and 26-24.

During the Idaho game on Friday, September 16, Wyoming lost in the fourth set, the final scores being 25-16, 23-25, 22-25, and 23-25.

McMahon added 17 kills to her total during that game, helping the cowgirls win the first set and put up a noble fight during the following three.

Her total number of kills so far this season is 1,028.

McMahon wears the number five in honor of her uncle who was killed in a car accident. Her uncle played football and he’s a big inspiration in what she does.

“I took it in high school and it’s kind of stuck ever since.”

She also has the number tattooed on her wrist, as a constant reminder that he is always there with her on and off the court.
