Pokes lose a historic rivalry game to BYU

The Cowboys traveled to Provo, UT,  Saturday, Sept. 24, to take on the BYU Cougars.

The Cougars were ranked number 19 in the NCAA currently the one and only ranked team the Cowboys will play this season.

With a slow start from BYU, the Pokes got ahead with an early field goal thanks to kicker John Hoyland, continuing his title as scoringest kicker in NCAA football. They were up 3-0 early on the Cougar team that was predicted to take care of the Cowboys very easily.

The Cougars cashed in on a rushing touchdown shortly after this, but the Cowboy offense wanted a taste of the endzone as well.

To open the second quarter, WR Wieland got some rushing work, and regained the lead for the Pokes, they were up 10-7.

This glimpse of hope was soon destroyed for Cowboy faithful as BYU QB Jaren Hall closed the first half with a passing touchdown, and further extended the lead in the third quarter, scoring two TDs to lead the Pokes 28-10.

Although being down big, the Cowboys were determined, and TE Welch scored a touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

BYU WR Hill finished off his night with another touchdown for 68 yards, beating CB Stone. Hill finished with 160 receiving yards on only five receptions.

WR Cobbs closed out Wyoming’s outing with a touchdown score, and finished with 64 yards on 4 receptions.

The Cowboys would go on to lose this game 38-24, after winning three straight in War Memorial Stadium.

The Pokes will come back to Laramie to take on San Jose State, on Oct. 1st, and look to bounce back.
