Local sorority raises awareness for mental health

The University of Wyoming sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma is hosting a philanthropy event called “ Taco ‘Bout Mental Health” to raise mental health awareness among college students on Saturday, Oct. 8.

The event will consist of yard games, tacos, and mental health resources for students. During the event, Kappa Kappa Gamma will raise money to donate to the Jed Foundation.

“The Jed Foundation is a nonprofit organization that represents millions of high school and college students to put systems, programs, and policies in place to create a culture of caring amongst students. And makes it more likely that struggling students get the help they need,”  Philanthropy chair and sophomore Bella Spicer said.

“We picked it as a chapter because the topic of mental health hits home for a lot of members. And so we like it was important to educate our peers and give back to organizations that help us and other college students”

Many chapter members are excited to bring this annual philanthropy event to campus in the hopes that it provides information and resources to both students and staff.

“I am excited to get the community together and talk about a very important topic that people don’t normally talk about,” sophomore Julianna Pizzato said.

“It is a great way to have these conversations and break the stigma around mental health.”

Throughout the week, members of Kappa Kappa Gamma have been tabling in the Wyoming Union to try and raise awareness not only for the event but for college students to come and learn information about mental health and different resources they can get.

“While tabling we received signatures from students on a pledge we made that helps break the stigma around mental health and create awareness in the community,” Spicer said.

“We handed out candy and stickers and collected donations from members of the university. So far, we have raised over $3,100 for the Jed Foundation and will continue to pursue our goal of $5,000 up until the end of Saturday’s event.”
