Wyoming beats New Mexico 27-14

Over the weekend,  the Wyoming Cowboys football team took on the New Mexico Lobos, desperately needing a win, especially inside the division.

The team traveled to Albuquerque coming off of a blowout loss to San Jose State, and they were on the brink of going below .500 winning percentage for the first time since week one.

They got off to a rough start, with New Mexico scoring two touchdowns very early in the first quarter. The Cowboys were down early, and it became evident that New Mexico quarterback (QB)  Kendrick knew how to use his legs.

To begin the second quarter, Cowboy QB Peasely unleashed his deep ball with a connection to tight end Welch. A deep 47 yard touchdown gave the Pokes a spike of momentum that would follow into the second half.

In the second half, Peasley yet again passed to Welch on a similar play action pass for the touchdown. The game was tied at 14, and New Mexico’s strong start was slowly slipping away from them.

The Pokes were playing terrific defense, not allowing a single point after the first quarter.

They finally took the lead in the third quarter with a 27 yard field goal from UW kicker Hoyland,  and the game was in the Pokes hands.

With an impressive reception from running back Swen, the Cowboys found themselves in field goal range once again, and extended their lead to 20-14.

With just a minute left in the game, Wyoming cornerback Stone picks off Kendrick on what could’ve been a game winning drive for the Lobos. He took the interception to the endzone, and sealed the game for the Cowboys with a final score of 27-14.

The Cowboys go into their bye week, but will be back at War Memorial Stadium for their homecoming matchup against Utah State, Oct. 22.
