Cowboys take down Hawaii for sixth win of the year

The Wyoming Cowboys football team took a trip to Hawaii, and took down the Rainbow Warriors, 27-20.

Following up a crucial win against the Utah State Aggies during Homecoming, the Pokes found themselves on a tropical island, looking to defeat Hawaii.

With yet another win under their belts, they end up earning bowl eligibility. The sixth win was the magic number for the Cowboys, and they will more than likely be competing in an extra game to end the 2022 season.

The Rainbow Warriors started out strong, getting an early 7-0 lead from a running back screen in the first quarter.

Quarterback (QB) Andrew Peasley began the second quarter with a touchdown of his own. It was clear that the Cowboys wanted to establish a powerful running attack this game, and Peasely played a huge part in this.

He would go on to end the game with 71 yards on 14 carries, tallying two touchdowns as well. With his first touchdown he brought the Pokes within three, making it 10-7.

To end the first half, Kicker (K) John Hoyland kicked a 34 yard field goal, and continued to play spectacularly.

He would put another one through to begin the second half, just for Hawaii’s kicker to do the same. The score was 13-13, in a game the Cowboys were supposed to handle fairly easily.

After winning Mountain West offensive player of the week last week, running back (RB) Titus Swen didn’t get as much work as last week. Instead, his backups were doing the heavy lifting this time.

RB Dawaiian McNeely broke free for a 61 yard touchdown to take the lead early in the fourth quarter. He would end the game with 81 yards on just four carries.

Another RB, D.Q. James had an impressive game as well. Ending the game with 179 yards on just 14 carries, he was a crucial part of the Cowboys winning effort.

After this, they would extend their lead to 27-13 after QB Peasley’s second rushing touchdown.

The game ended 27-20, leaving the Cowboys with only three more games remaining this season. They earned bowl eligibility along with Boise State, the first teams in the Mountain West Conference to do so this season.

They will play a bit closer to home in a couple of weeks, taking on the Colorado State Rams in Fort Collins on Saturday, Nov. 12.
