Super Bowl LVII preview

On Sunday, Feb. 12, the biggest sports event in the United States will take place. The Kansas City Chiefs of the AFC will face off against the NFC’s Philadelphia Eagles for the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl LVII.

The Chiefs, with a current season record of 16-3, will be contesting for the Lombardi for the third time in four seasons. Kansas City earned their sport after narrowly besting the Cincinnati Bengals for the AFC title with a 23-20 win.

Philadelphia also sits at a season record of 16-3 and returns to the Super Bowl for their fourth time ever after shutting down the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC title game with a near blowout win of 31-7.

With both conferences advancing their number one seed to the Super Bowl, the matchup is sure to provide a spectacular game. But who will come out on top?

Mahomes and Reid will put on a show

Mahomes finished the regular season with an impressive stats sheet, as to be expected by an MVP favorite. The QB finished the regular season with a 67.1 completion percentage (CMP) and maintained a slightly improved record in his two post season games thus far with a 69.9 CMP.

Despite a sprained ankle, Mahomes is clearly playing at an elite level, and arguably the best he ever has. Paired with a superstar tight end, Travis Kelce, the Chief’s iconic offensive line is ready to shine.

Andy Ried will have a chance to best his former team in the first meeting of the Eagles and Chiefs in Super Bowl history. Ried currently holds the second-highest winning record of any coach in the postseason, only behind Bill Belichick. Ried now coaches a strong and experienced team capable of outsmarting, and outplaying, any team in the league.

Hurts and the Eagles will crush the rush

Philadelphia’s QB Jalen Hurts ended his season with incredible passing stats, and even more impressive rushing stats. Perhaps one of the best rushing QBs in the league, with a season total of 760 yards in 2022, Hurts will use his legs to put the Eagles in prime position to bring home the Lombardi Trophy.

Philadelphia’s rush has been nearly unstoppable in the postseason, with 416 yards moved over 88 carries. Kenneth Gainwell (RB) and Miles Sanders (RB) have aided Hurts with 54 carries and nearly 300 yards combined in two postseason games.

University of Wyoming alumni Marcus Epps, safety, will be defending against Mahomes during the game, and represents the only remaining UW graduate playing in the game.

Prediction

The Kansas City Chiefs will bring home the Lombardi Trophy on Sunday. While Hurts and the Eagles are certain to put up a challenge, Steve Spagnuolo and Andy Reid hold too many aces to let this one go. KC will come out on top with a final score of 28-24.

Super Bowl LVII takes place at 4:30 P.M. MST in Glendale, Arizona at State Farm Stadium.
