Cowgirls Struggle in 1-3 loss against San Diego State

The Wyoming Cowgirls Volleyball team lost 1-3 against the San Diego State Aztecs this Saturday in the Arena-Auditorium. The game now marks the Cowgirls 4th loss in a row, giving them a 0-4 mark to start out Mountain West conference play.

The first set was a strong one from the Cowgirls, as they found themselves breaking away from the Aztecs near the middle of the set with a 5-0 run from 15-12. The Cowgirls extended this lead and never looked back, cruising to a 25-17 win on the set.

The second set saw intense back and forth action from the Aztecs and Cowgirls, as neither team could string together a run to pull ahead of the other. The Aztects were eventually able to pull themselves ahead of the Cowgirls, edging them 27-25 to win the set.

The third set picked up right where the second set left off, as the Cowgirls and Aztecs were once again trading punches early in the set. However, the Cowgirls found themselves falling behind because of sloppy play and were forced to play from behind towards the end of the set. The Cowgirls were unable to come back and lost the set 21-25 to the Aztecs.

The fourth set was a forgettable one at best for the Cowgirls, as they struggled to find their footing. The Aztecs jumped ahead of the Cowgirls, leading 23-13 late in the set. The Cowgirls attempted a late surge but didn’t have enough steam to mount the comeback, eventually losing the set 16-25.

The Cowgirls recorded a poor hitting percentage, only reaching .111 percent. Despite their own struggles, they were able to hold the Aztecs to a .172 hitting percentage. The Cowgirl defensive stand also held an advantage at the net with 16 blocks compared to the Aztecs’ 11.

Tierney Barlow and Rylee Schulz led the Cowgirls’ offensive attack with 9 kills apiece. Kasia Partyka had 28 assits. Defensively, Barlow led with 7 blocks and Partyka and Schulz had 9 digs apiece.

The Cowgirls will return to action against Colorado State in the Border War, with the game set to begin at 6:30 at the UniWyo Sports Complex on Tuesday.
