PSA to parents: helping your long-distant student

Knowing and utilizing your student’s address could be just what they need to de-stress for finals.

As the semester goes along, stress levels rise as finals week approaches. Several things can be done by friends and family to help relieve the stress and show support. From care packages, to coffee shop gift cards to something as simple as a phone call can increase morale for students during their week of studying.

Care packages can be homemade with personalized gifts and reminders of home, or prepackaged from local small businesses and UW resources. They can even be found online.

“[My family] used to send me care packages, which I did really appreciate. Usually different kinds of candy, or a funny inside joke,” Brian Baker, a senior mechanical engineering student said.

The added stress of finals week can be even more impactful to those who are from out of state, whose families are not nearby to offer support.

Although he is from in-state, Baker’s family is still 7 hours away, which makes for quite the trek when it comes to family support.

“I definitely try to keep in communication with [my family]. I’m a senior this year so I’ve kinda proved that I can get through it, so I think they’re a little less worried about me,” he said. “They’ve definitely reached out and wished me good luck.”

Something as simple as a phone call can be enough to get through the week as well.

In addition to family support, students are encouraged to use UW resources to reduce the strain caused by finals. The university is hosting a number of events throughout the week, which can be found on the library’s website.
