Springtime Ski Season

Great Resorts for Spring Fun in the State of Wyoming

Skiing! Snowboarding! If you’ve ever been, you know just how much fun these two things can be. But aren’t our neighbors to the south more well known for their resorts? Isn’t winter the best time to go skiing? Am I running out of time to go? Fear not, intrepid reader. The state of Wyoming has its own world-class ski resorts both near Laramie and far away, and some say that springtime, not winter, is the best time to go skiing in our wonderful state.

In the mountain west, natives know that early and mid-winter are just cold; not a whole lot of snow to be seen. But unlike in the rest of the country where may showers bring may flowers, in Wyoming, may blizzards bring… gizzards? May need to workshop that one a bit… Nevertheless, the later the season goes, the snowier it gets, normally! March is Wyoming’s snowiest month, and it’s just around the corner. Even though we’ve had bad luck with snow this year, you never know when fortunes can change; and lucky for you, resorts are open regardless.

Right in our backyard is the Snowy Range Ski Area, a small but fun and high-quality resort great for any UWYO student looking to get out onto the slopes for a day. As of February 18, Snowy range has 100% of its terrain open, and it has terrain for everyone! From Greens near the base, to the Rattler, a challenging black diamond mogul field towards the top, and everything in between, Snowy Range presents a wide range of opportunities to both the beginner and advanced skier.

For Wyoming’s other resorts, a little bit of travel is required, as most of them are in the north of the state. While Hogadon basin provides a fun small resort opportunity for UWYO students operating out of our Casper campus, most resorts are going to be further north, near Yellowstone and in the Northern Rockies. One of these resorts is Grand Targhee, located right on the border with Idaho and near the Tetons. Grand Targhee is known for its powder, and this season has been no exception, with February providing an active snowy season to the resort.

Arguably the best-known resort in Wyoming, Jackson Hole also presents an amazing opportunity for anyone skilled enough to brave its steep slopes (although there’s plenty for beginners as well!). Located right near Yellowstone National Park and the town of Jackson, Wyoming, Jackson Hole is Wyoming’s largest Ski Resort, boasting over 2,500 acres and an impressive 4,139-foot variation in elevation.

So what are you waiting for? The Campus Outdoor program has skiing equipment ready to rent, and Wyoming has plenty of resorts to check out! Why not give Snowy Range a go this weekend? Sometimes a little winter activity is what we need to get the gears turning for academic success in the winter semester.
