Spring Weather

How to make the most of the so-called “spring” in Laradice

You might have heard this classic saying describing Wyoming weather: “There are only two seasons: snow and rodeo.”

Oftentimes, the only thing that seems consistent in Wyoming’s weather is the ever-present wind.

The history of Spring snow in Wyoming goes back as far as we can track it. According to the Water Resources Data System & Wyoming State Climate Office, between 1892 and 1961, the average April snowfall was 9.39 inches. 3.30 in May and .48 in June.

The records of the same period are 31 inches in April, 12 inches in May, and 7 inches in June!

The only months without snowfall from 1982 to 2013 were July and August, limiting what people would consider “nice weather” to two months of the year.

It may not seem like it, but we’re lucky here in Laradice. Other towns in Wyoming, like Lander, have had blizzards with over 19 inches of snow in April.

Snowfall combined with wind can lead to massive snowdrifts and icy roads. Digging yourself out of your house and hoping for electricity is a terrible, often dangerous experience, so make sure you stock up on supplies and have good winter gear in case things take a turn for the worse.

On the bright side, there is a lot of fun to be had in the snow. Sledding and making a snowman aren’t just activities for young kids. Get together with some of your friends and bundle up to go out and have fun. The snowfall can also make skiing better for longer if you’re into that sort of thing,

A snow day can be fantastic if you try. Cozy up with some hot cocoa and binge some movies or a show.

Needless to say, the weather in Spring isn’t always blooming tulips and April showers that lead to May flowers.

Don’t plant your gardens too soon; you never know when the last frost may be.

Of course, this isn’t the case every year. Good springs do exist, and as shown over the last week, cloudless war days are possible, but snowstorms often follow them, so get out in the sun while you can!

The second you see some nice temperatures, run outside and make the most of it. Go to the mountains and hike, enjoy the scenery, or just walk around Washington Park.

Be sure to pack some layers, though, even nice spring days can have a chill in the air and can turn bad on a dime. Check the weather before going out too far and always keep an eye on the road.

Spring in Wyoming may only feel like spring for brief blinks, but if you try, there is fun to be had both inside and outside.
