Traven Sharon can rope and wrestle. The University of Wyoming freshman is not only a talented wrestler, but also one of the nation’s top all-around cowboys.
“The biggest challenge for me right now is just balancing my time between my different events and wrestling. Making sure that I am putting in the time and effort where I need to and doing my job everywhere from the classroom to the arena,” said Sharon.
The freshman comes to the University of Wyoming from his family’s ranch in Ordway, Colorado. On the family ranch, Sharon helped run cows and yearlings while also riding horses. He started competing in junior rodeos at the age of 9. In addition to rodeo, he wrestled throughout his high school career at Fowler High School.
Sharon accomplished an impressive feat during high school, becoming one of only a select few four-time state wrestling champions. Recruiting interest began during his senior year, but Sharon knew long before then where he wanted to attend college.
“Wearing the Brown and Gold is something that I grew up thinking was just the coolest thing ever, and now getting to compete as a Cowboy is a lifestyle. We always get preached to LCT (Live Cowboy Tough) on the wrestling team and that means to compete not only in the field but also in life,” said Sharon.
Reflecting on his current season, Sharon feels he has made the most of his opportunities.
“My season so far has been pretty solid. There’s always one calf or horse that a guy wants back, but in the end I feel like I’ve done well to capitalize when I’ve gotten the opportunity. That’s probably where I’ve grown the most as well, just being able to do my job and capitalize on every opportunity I get and really help the team.”
As the season continues, Sharon remains focused on what he can control.
“As far as the rest of the season goes, I’m just really focusing on doing my job and putting the rest in Christ’s hands. Win, lose, or draw, it’s a great day to win and an even better day to be a Poke!”
