Pioneers conquer the Pokes

The University of Wyoming Swimming and Diving team had a meet this Saturday, Oct. 14, against the University of Denver Pioneers at the Laramie High School pool. The Pioneers were able to edge out both the men’s and women’s teams of Wyoming.

The meet started off with the 200-yard medley relay. Denver swimmers took first in both the men and women’s race at this event. The next event was the women’s 1,000-yard freestyle, this race ended in quite a spectacular fashion with Talita Teflan of the Cowgirls and Maddie Myers of the Pioneers ending in a tie at the time 10:35.07.

Standout performances that took place in the first half of the meet came from Kelly Sheldon of the Cowgirls who won the women’s 200 yard freestyle in a time of 1:54.43, Sid Farber of Denver who won the men’s 50 yard freestyle event with a time of 20.06 seconds, and Kyle White of Wyoming who won the men’s 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 56.66 seconds.

The score heading into the diving break for the men’s meet was 85 to 67, Denver ahead. The score for the women’s meet at this time was 76.5 to 75, Cowgirls ahead. The women’s diving team led by sophomore Karla Contreras was able to put up 27.5 points, with the highest score on a dive going to Contreras with a score of an 8.5.

The score of the men’s meet after the diving break was 106 to 83, Denver. The score on the women’s side was 104 to 85, Wyoming. The Cowgirls came out of the diving break hot with Hannah Mclean Leonard winning the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 52.67 seconds.

However, this would not last for the Cowgirls as the Denver women’s team started to make a comeback after the diving break. Highlights of this comeback consist of Myers winning the 500-yard freestyle for Denver in a time of 5:06.82, and Morgan McCormick winning the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:03.52 for the Pioneers.

The women’s meet actually came down to the final race, which was the 400-yard freestyle relay. Wyoming took first in this event in a time of 3:28.50, but second and third place finishes from the Denver team gave them the advantage. Denver managed to squeeze the victory from the Cowgirls with a close final score of 151.5 to 150.5.

The Cowboys started to close the gap in points after the diving break, with a key win from Wade Nelson in the 200 yard IM at a time of 1:54.00. However it was not enough and the Denver men’s team was able to get the victory with a final score of Denver, 163, to Wyoming, 139.

The next meet for the Wyoming Swimming and Diving team will be Friday, Oct. 20, against the New Mexico State Lobos. The meet will take place in New Mexico.
